Wireless

library-wifiIf you're looking for a place where you can use your laptop or mobile device to surf the internet, check your email, finish homework, or do some research, then the library has got you covered.

Wireless internet access (Wi-Fi) is available at all five library branches in the Citrus County Library System. Use your wireless enabled device (like a laptop, tablet, or smart phone) to access the internet for web browsing or email. 

Please be certain your usage is restricted to basic web browsing or related activities. Advanced use, such as use for or need of specialized ports for SMTP, Remote Desktop, Corporate Intranets, etc., are not provided for on our wired or wireless connection. The library wireless network is compatible with 802.11b/g/n standards, and should work for every major laptop or device.

Wi-fi is free and available at all library locations:

Network Identifier or SSID: Public Wireless.

Trouble Connecting?
    • Make sure your device is wireless (Wi-Fi) capable. Blue Tooth technology is not Wi-Fi. 
    • Is the wireless card or built-in technology turned on?
    • Is the device in "default" configuration so that it will pick up any broadcast?
    • Are other wireless networks overriding ours? Our wireless broadcasts as "Public Wireless." Is this the network you are connected to?
    • Is the device locked down by protection software or is wireless access disabled?

Printing is not available using the library's wireless connection. To access a printer, sign up to use the library's public internet work stations.

The public wireless network employs limited security, and the library advises that you do not conduct sensitive transactions (such as banking or shopping) over the wireless network. Data transfer between your laptop or mobile device and the wireless access point (WAP) are not secure. We suggest you install or activate the native firewall in Windows XP/Vista or some other third party program to ensure secure communication and data transfer. (This is good practice for any public wireless connection you may use, such as a coffeeshop, restaurant, or store).

The library bears no responsibility for presumed hacking or personal security breaches. Use of the wireless network is at your own risk.

9. Can I send a fax? 

Can I use the Internet?
Public computers can be used free of charge at all branch locations. Your library card number (check under the barcode on the back of your card) and PIN is required to log on.

Visitor's passes are available at the counter for those in town for a short time. Visitor's passes are only issued once per day.

How long can I use the Internet?
Library patrons are granted access to Internet computers for a total of 180 minutes (3 hours) per day. You can have as many as 60 minutes per session for three sessions.

Internet time use is tracked by minutes (e.g., if a customer uses 30 minutes during their first session, they will have 150 minutes remaining).

Visitor's passes grant 60 minutes of usage. This time is also tracked by minutes. Visitor's passes are only valid on the day of issue.

What software is available?
The Windows XP operating system is currently in use on all public computers, which come equipped with:
  • Internet access (Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox)
  • Microsoft Office Suite Professional 2010 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher)
  • Windows Media Player
  • CD/DVD burning capability
Can I use free wireless?
All library branches are equipped with wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access.

You may bring in your own wireless-capable device (laptop or mobile device) and connect to the Internet.

An internal or external wireless card, as well as software appropriate to the card, is required for the device. Most devices manufactured within the last five years come already equipped with wireless capability.

The library's wireless networks is an open, public network, and the library does not recommend that you conduct secure transactions, such as banking or shopping, over the public wireless network.

Can I print?

Public computers within the library will print to a networked printer; copies print in black and white only. At this time, wireless printing is unavailable. 

How much does it cost to print?

Printing costs $.15 per page and can be paid at the checkout desk by cash or check only. Checks under $5 cannot be accepted. For large print jobs, visit the checkout desk prior to printing.

Can I make a photocopy?

Photocopier machines are available at all branches. Copy paper is supplied; other paper may not be used. 

How much does it cost to make a photocopy?

Cost for photocopies is $.15 per page. Machines take coins, $1 bills, and $5 bills for large jobs.

Can I send a fax?

The libraries do not provide public fax machines, but can supply information local businesses that offer this service.

Ebooks & OverDrive FAQ

1. When will the library get ebooks for me to download?

The library system is partnering with OverDrive to make downloadable ebooks available to the public with a target date of Wednesday, February 15th. Before that, ebooks will not be available. After February 15th, you will be able to access the library system's OverDrive catalog of ebooks.

2. OverDrive? What is OverDrive?

OverDrive is the leading digital distributor of ebooks, audiobooks, and other digital content to libraries. OverDrive works with book publishers to manage content securely and provides the software necessary to download and access that content.

All of the downloadable ebooks are accessed through OverDrive software--whether by web browser or through an application on your device.

3. What devices does OverDrive support?

OverDrive supports all major e-reader devices, such as the Nook, Kindle, iPad, and Sony eReader. For a complete list of supported devices that can access downloadable ebooks from OverDrive, visit the OverDrive Device Resource Center.

4. Do I set this up at the library?

No, in almost all cases you will manage this software from home. Several of the devices require download of OverDrive's software, which must be synced to your specific device and cannot be downloaded to library computers.

5. Where can I find help?

You'll be able to access a multitude of resources from a Downloadables Help Center on the library website. The Help Center will go live at the beginning of February. Library staff will also be able to direct you to resources for troubleshooting OverDrive and ebooks.
