Ask A Librarian, Florida’s virtual reference service, is designed to handle requests similar to those asked at the reference desk in the library or by telephone. A trained information professional can guide you to the answer you need in minutes rather than your wasting hours navigating hundreds of unhelpful and irrelevant web sites. More than 100 libraries statewide collaborate to provide this service to their patrons and the patrons of other participating libraries.
There are three formats in which virtual reference questions can be submitted. You can choose to either:
With the exception of holidays, live Chat is available: * Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 am – Midnight * Friday and Saturday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Chat allows you to communicate with a librarian in real time.
With the exception of holidays, Text Messaging is available: * Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 am – Midnight * Friday and Saturday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm Our texting service means you can text us from your mobile phone at the moment you need assistance from wherever you are! Use Text to ask simple, quick questions (up to 160 characters) that can be answered in brief responses. You will text a local phone number and include a keyword before your question. You will receive an answer from a live librarian within minutes! * Local phone number: (352) 354-2991 (you must include the area code) *Start your message with the keyword: cls Since Ask A Librarian is staffed by real librarians from public, academic, and special libraries throughout Florida, you will most likely chat with or text a librarian who does not work at your local library and does not have access to your personal library records”
Questions may be submitted via email at any time. Please be sure to include your name, phone number, return email address, and as many details about your question as possible. A Librarian will get back to you within 72 hours, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. For example, questions received on Friday will receive a response by the following Wednesday.
Ask a Librarian is administered by the Tampa Bay Library Consortium and is funded as part of the Florida Electronic Library by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant.
Our library system has a fiercely active community of library supporters, and there are lots of ways for you to be involved: you can volunteer individually or through the Friends of the Library, work with the Library Advisory Board, or partner with us through your community business or organization.
The Friends of the Library are non-profit organizations dedicated to enhancing public library service for the citizens of Citrus County.
Friends are people who love books, love to read, and want to help others enjoy the pleasure of reading. Friends raise money through memberships, used-book sales, promotional item sales, special events, and donations. Friends inform officials of issues affecting libraries locally, state-wide, and nationally. Friends encourage gifts or memorials of funds, books, and library equipment. Friends donate time and resources to the libraries and Friends’ organizations.
