A Celebration of Florida Women

Today the women of Florida play a tremendous role in local, state, and national government. Women serve on Florida’s Supreme Court, in the Governor’s Cabinet, on city and county commissions, in Congress, in the State Legislature, and in a variety of other capacities. This has not always been true. Even after women were granted the right to vote in 1920, traditional views of a woman’s role in society often stymied the efforts of women seeking public office. Join Florida historian, Joshua Goodman from the State Archives of Florida, as he illuminates the determination of Florida’s women to transform the political landscape and assert their fitness to serve. Starting with Florida’s earliest female elected officials, Goodman will describe the evolution of voters’ attitudes toward women in public office, including women of color.
